The Food and Drug Administration on Feb. 27 authorized Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, beginning the rollout of millions of doses of a ___ effective vaccine that could reach Americans by early next week.

The announcement arrived at a critical moment, as the steep decline in coronavirus cases seems to have plateaued and millions of Americans are on waiting lists for shots.

Johnson & Johnson has pledged to provide the United States with 100 million doses by the end of June. When combined with the 600 million doses from the two-shot vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna slated to arrive by the end of July, there will be more than enough shots to cover any American adult who wants one.

The golfer Tiger Woods sustained serious leg injuries after being injured ___ in Los Angeles County on Feb. 23.

Tiger Woods sustained serious leg injuries on Feb. 23 after the luxury S.U.V. he was driving struck the median of a road in Los Angeles County, crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic, and rolled over several times before coming to a stop in a grassy area several hundred feet from where he had been driving, the authorities said.

At 12:30 a.m. Eastern time on Feb. 24, a statement appeared on Woods’s Twitter account, saying that he had “undergone a long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle” and that he was “currently awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room.” The statement added that a rod had been inserted into his right tibia and that screws and pins were used to stabilize bones in his ankle and foot.

Which of the news stories related to the Biden administration did NOT happen this past week?

“The president has been clear to all of us—words matter, tone matters, and civility matters,” said Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, speaking about the changes in language at the Department of Homeland Security. In addition, the Interior Department now makes sure that mentions of its stakeholders include “Tribal” people (with a capital “T” as preferred by Native Americans, it said).

Also, the United States on Feb. 25 carried out airstrikes in eastern Syria against buildings belonging to what the Pentagon said were Iran-backed militias responsible for recent attacks against American and allied personnel in Iraq.

And finally, President Biden’s agenda is facing its most consequential test as Democrats prepare to maneuver his $1.9 trillion stimulus package through the evenly divided Senate, an effort that could strain the fragile alliance between progressives and centrists and the limits of Biden’s power in Congress.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia approved the assassination of the ___ Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, according to an intelligence report that the Biden administration released on Feb. 26.

An elite team of operatives helped carry out the killing, the report said. The team reported directly to Prince Mohammed, who cultivated a climate of fear that made it unlikely for aides to act without his consent, according to the report. It omitted the brutal details of Khashoggi’s death, after Saudi officials lured him to their consulate in Istanbul.

But the Biden administration took no direct action against Prince Mohammed, the de facto ruler of the kingdom, instead announcing travel and financial sanctions on other Saudis involved in the killing and on members of the elite unit of the Royal Guard who protect the crown prince. The administration concluded it could not risk a full rupture of its relationship with the kingdom, relied on by the United States to help contain Iran, to counter terrorist groups, and to broker peaceful relations with Israel. Cutting off Saudi Arabia could also push its leaders toward China.

Hasbro is giving its Mr. Potato Head toy a more gender-inclusive identity by ___.

“Hasbro is making sure all feel welcome in the Potato Head world by officially dropping the Mr. from the Mr. Potato Head brand name and logo to promote gender equality and inclusion,” the company said in an initial statement on Feb. 25.

On social media, some people took the statement to mean a change to the Mr. Potato Head character. Before long, Hasbro issued a clarifying statement on Twitter saying that the Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head characters would retain their individual courtesy titles.

A man was shot in Los Angeles on Feb. 24 while he was walking two French bulldogs who belonged to the singer ___, the police said.

Lady Gaga’s two French bulldogs were recovered unharmed on Feb. 26 in Los Angeles, the police said, two days after thieves stole the dogs and shot a man who was walking them.

The dog walker, later identified by Lady Gaga as Ryan Fischer, was shot on Feb. 24 after two people got out of a white car and demanded that he “turn over the dogs at gunpoint,” the Los Angeles Police Department said in a Twitter thread. After a struggle, they made off with two of the three dogs he had been walking. Fischer was taken to a hospital and was in serious but stable condition on Feb. 26.

Someone took the dogs to a Los Angeles police station at about 6 p.m. Feb. 26, and a representative of Lady Gaga’s picked them up, said Officer Mike Lopez, a police spokesman. “The dogs are returned safely,” he said.

The Army has issued new regulations that allow women to wear lipstick and ___.

The latest update to the Army’s uniform and grooming regulations, which takes effect on Feb. 26, offers several revisions that give the 127,000 women serving in the Army and National Guard a chance to finally let their hair down—at least a bit.

For the first time, women will be allowed to have buzz cuts. And they will be able to wear combinations of styles, such as locs pulled back in a ponytail, which for years were off limits. The new rules allow short ponytails at all times, and long ponytails in combat and in training when a bun might otherwise interfere with equipment.

The revised regulations are a response to the growing number of women, particularly Black women, in its ranks.
