NUMBER of indigenous people in Canada. That represents almost 5 percent of Canada’s population. Indigenous people are the fastest-growing group in Canada, with a population that increased 42 percent from 2006 to 2016, the date of Canada’s most recent national census. The rapid growth is fueled by the rise in Canadians who identify themselves as indigenous, higher fertility rates, and a longer life expectancy for indigenous people than in the past.
